Info and Eligibility

Our BIGs nominations are now closed. All nominees will be invited to submit a expression of interest by Friday 28 June 12 noon.

Since the launch of our Newcastle Building Society Community Fund at the Community Foundation in 2016, over £320,000 has been given in grants to projects across the North East and Cumbria.

Building on this success, we introduced Building Improvement Grants (BIGs) in 2018. This grant programme provides larger amounts of up to £50,000 for community groups or charities in the region who need to make improvements to their community buildings. This might include: construction, expansion, renovation or replacement of an existing facility or facilities.

Eligibility

Applications are sought from community groups and charitable organisations with an annual income of between £10k and £250k, located in the North East and Cumbria, near where we have a branch.

Before submitting an Expression of Interest community groups must be nominated by a current Newcastle Building Society customer.

What is the grant for?

The grant will support a specific renovation project related to your community building. The project must be solely funded by the Newcastle Building Society Community Fund at the Community Foundation.

All projects will need to be nominated by a society customer and will be expected to provide:

  • A strong project plan, budget and process for managing the work
  • A rationale for carrying out the work
  • A clear and robust plan for income generation following the work
  • A strong commitment to measure what has been achieved and share the story of their work

Application process

There is a two-stage application process:

Stage one

You will be asked to provide us with a Newcastle Building Society Building Renovation Grant Expression of Interest (EOI). In no more than two sides of A4 (font size 12) it should include:

  • Confirmation that your group is based in a location where there is a Newcastle Building Society branch
  • A description of your group; its governance structure; staffing levels; a summary of what you do; income and expenditure for the year
  • A clear and costed project proposal
  • Please state if planning permission is required and whether or not this has been granted

Stage Two

Successful applicants from stage one will be invited to submit a full proposal, using the Community Foundation’s standard online application form. In line with our usual guidelines, applications that do not include written estimates will not be considered.

Applicants must be prepared to spend their grant within a year commencing success of an application.

Exclusions

Normal exclusions will apply (see www.communityfoundation.org.uk/apply)
